Brisbane: Jack Clayton will resume on 99 not out on the third morning at the Gabba, with Queensland 5-202 in reply to Victoria's 307 in their Sheffield Shield clash. The hosts trail by 105 runs with five wickets standing, and the balance of the match rests squarely on how the number four navigates the opening session on Monday.
Clayton managed just four runs from the final over of day two, bowled by part-time spinner Ollie Peake, before stumps were called on Sunday. It means an uneasy night's sleep awaits a batsman who is one run away from a first-class century and knows that a single error on the third morning would undo nearly five sessions of work.
On form, though, Clayton is well placed. The innings is his fourth half-century of the summer across the Shield and one-day competitions. He has faced 191 balls and struck eight fours, holding one end firm while wickets fell around him. Hayden Kerr was unbeaten on 14 at the close, having helped his partner add 28 without further loss.
Queensland's innings began badly. Victorian captain Will Sutherland brought himself into the attack and bowled Hugh Weibgen with his very first delivery, then had number three Hugo Burdon caught by Marcus Harris at third slip later in the same over, leaving the hosts reeling at 2-33.
Clayton and opener Angus Lovell responded with an 85-run stand for the third wicket that wrested the initiative back from the visitors. It was the partnership Queensland needed, steadying the innings and blunting the seamers' rhythm.
Matt Hennig was brought back into the attack and, like his captain, struck with the first ball of his spell, trapping Lovell lbw for 36 for his maiden Shield wicket. Two overs later Liam Blackford took a sharp bat-pad catch off Hennig and Lachlan Hearne departed for two.
When Jimmy Peirson skied spinner Todd Murphy to Sutherland at mid-wicket, Queensland had slipped to 5-174 and were in real trouble again. The shot illustrated the risk of attacking a spinner while a partnership was still being rebuilt.
Earlier, Victoria resumed on 9-282 and were dismissed for 307. Mitch Swepson collected his second wicket when he removed Hennig for four, while Sutherland finished unbeaten on 43. Cameron Gannon was the pick of the Queensland bowlers with 5-66, and Jem Ryan claimed three wickets.
The Gabba surface traditionally offers seam movement early before settling down, which makes the next two days decisive. If Queensland can erase most of the deficit without further damage, they will be well placed to dictate terms later in the game. Victoria's counter-plan is straightforward: use the second new ball and the Hennig-Murphy pairing to bowl the hosts out for something in the region of 250-270 and bank a meaningful first-innings lead.
Sutherland's willingness to bowl himself at key moments paid off, and Hennig made an immediate impression on his Shield introduction. Murphy, meanwhile, kept the middle overs tight enough to deny Clayton a free-flowing partner at the other end.
Queensland's hopes rest on their anchor. Clayton has largely avoided risk against the quicks and has used the crease well against spin. Survive the first hour, reach three figures, and find support from Kerr and the lower order, and Queensland could yet pass Victoria's total.
As things stand, the game remains genuinely open: a 105-run deficit, five wickets in hand, and one unbeaten batsman on 99. Monday's first session should go a long way towards deciding who holds the whip hand.
